Chapter 15:

Jyoti Goes for a Weekend Getaway to Mahabaleshwar

A weekend break is very much required in life, but the break I am talking about changed my entire life. This weekend I found my Mr. Right.

Baba suggested that Aai, Om and I should pack our bags because we were going to visit a friend of his. Baba told aai, ‘See that Jyoti is joyful; I want her to forget whatever has happened to her. Let her forget the past and instead enjoy her life and fancy about her future.’ It was some hours’ drive from my place, Kolhapur. My aai suggested that I should carry beautiful jewelry and sarees with me. When I asked what the purpose was, she told that we were going to visit a friend’s house and some function was going to take place. She made sure that I carried the best of my dresses and ornaments. ‘You should dress up nicely, dear. Many of our relatives are going to come here, so you should look your best.’ I could not understand why she was worrying so much about my dressing sense.

It was a long journey and we commenced our journey in a car which was hired by Baba for this long journey. On the way there came a Devi Mandir. I saw my aai and baba get down and bow to the devi, as if my aai vowed something to the devi. I couldn’t understand what it was, but I did not bother to ask her. Earlier I used to be very talkative, but now life seemed to snatch away something from me, my speaking habit. I seemed quite indifferent to whatever was happening. I stared outside the window instead, imagining nothing.

When we reached the desired place, I saw some people were busy running here and there in good clothes and fine jewelry It was somebody’s engagement party. The girl was decked up like a devi and the boy’s side was praising her jewelry and sarees. There were little girls decked up in ghagras. We were greeted by the women of the house. My aai was embraced by a lady and I was introduced to her. I was asked to touch her feet as that was a culture in our society. Baba exchanged words with those people, seemed as if they were his long time friends. The girl’s bhai (brother) was seen busy around her. The girl’s mother seemed to eye me and introduced me to the girl’s bhai. ‘His name is Nishant; he is a computer engineer, and he’s my son staying in the US.’

I didn’t know how to greet him. He said, ‘Hi’. I just shook my head.

Later after the engagement ceremony was over the girl’s aai came and sat beside me. She was a fat lady wearing all the jewelry in her house and was questioning me with curious eyes. She asked me everything regarding my lifestyle, and what I intended to do in my life. She called Nishant who sat next to me and started chatting.
